• Shabana Azmi personally recommended Kulbhushan Kharbanda to director Shyam Benegal for 'Susman' (1987). She had worked with Benegal before and knew he needed a strong actor for the male lead. Kharbanda got the role because she vouched for him.
• In 'Antarnaad' (1991), Kharbanda played a rigid patriarch while Azmi played his rebellious daughter-in-law. Their scenes together crackled because Kharbanda deliberately underplayed his anger, letting Azmi's intensity fill the silence. He later said he learned to trust pauses from watching her work.
