Legacy & Influence
Sonakshi Sinha's career in Bollywood represents a distinct trajectory from a blockbuster debut to a performer seeking nuanced roles. Her introduction as the quintessential 'Bollywood heroine' opposite Salman Khan in 'Dabangg' (2010) cemented her as a bankable star in commercial potboilers, often playing the love interest in male-centric action films. This early phase capitalized on her screen presence and established a strong fanbase. However, a significant turn came with Vikramaditya Motwane's period drama 'Lootera' (2013). Her portrayal of the fragile, heartbroken Pakhi Roychoudhary was a critical revelation, showcasing a depth and vulnerability that diverged sharply from her earlier work. This performance is widely regarded as her career-best and demonstrated her capability for subtle, layered acting. While she continued to headline mass entertainers, she also selectively chose roles in films like the thriller 'Ittefaq' (2017) and the ensemble patriotic drama 'Mission Mangal' (2019), where she held her own among established stars. Her contribution lies in navigating both the demands of mainstream Hindi cinema and the pursuit of performance-oriented projects, broadening the scope for actresses who debut in archetypal roles. She has also been a prominent figure in advocating for body positivity and resisting industry stereotypes about appearance, using her platform to speak against online trolling. Her career, marked by commercial successes and critical appreciation for specific performances, illustrates the evolving space for leading women in Bollywood who balance star power with artistic ambition.
