The Kovai Sarala & Charle partnership

They saved their best for last — Thenkasi Pattanam (5.2/10) came 15 years in. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Anand (1987) to Thenkasi Pattanam (2002).

The ran closed with Thenkasi Pattanam in 2002. It started with Anand (1987).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Anand; the 2000s to Thenkasi Pattanam. Kovai Sarala acted in every film; Charle acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Charle was a stage actor with zero film experience when Kovai Sarala recommended him to director S. A. Chandrasekhar for Anand (1987). She had seen him perform in a drama and told the director: 'He’ll steal every scene.' He did.
  • In Amma Pillai (1990), Sarala and Charle played a bickering couple. The director let them improvise entire stretches of dialogue. Charle would set up a punchline with a straight face; Sarala would undercut it with a deadpan reaction. That push-pull rhythm became their trademark.
  • On the sets of Gopala Gopala (1996), Sarala and Charle had a running bet: whoever broke character first during a comedy scene had to buy lunch for the entire crew. Charle lost so often that the unit started calling him 'Annachi' — the guy who always pays.
  • Thenkasi Pattanam (2002) was their last film together. It also launched the career of comedian Sathyan, who played their son. Sarala and Charle insisted the director cast the newcomer after seeing him in a small TV skit. Sathyan later credited them as his 'film school'.
  • Charle once said in an interview: 'Sarala is the only co-star who made me forget my lines — because I was too busy laughing at her timing. She’d wink at me mid-scene and I’d be gone.'
