The Nizhalgal Ravi & Pandu partnership

After 14 years apart, they came back together for Katham Katham (2015). They didn't share a set between 2001 and 2015. Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Ratha Dhanam (1988) to Narathan (2016). It started with Ratha Dhanam (1988).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Ratha Dhanam; the 2010s to Narathan. Nizhalgal Ravi acted in every film; Pandu acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Ratha Dhanam (1988), almost didn't happen. The director wanted a bigger star for Ravi's role, but Pandu — already a known face — personally vouched for Ravi and convinced the team to cast him.
  • In Meendum Savithri (1996), Pandu played the comic relief while Ravi played the straight man. But on set, they swapped roles between takes — Pandu would rehearse Ravi's serious lines in a goofy voice to make him laugh, and Ravi would deadpan Pandu's jokes to throw him off. That back-and-forth is why their scenes feel so loose.
  • Pandu and Ravi shared a house in Chennai for two years after James Pandu (2000) wrapped. They'd cook together, argue over who left the bathroom wet, and rehearse lines at 2 AM. Their landlord finally kicked them out after neighbours complained about the noise.
  • Shahjahan (2001) was the only film where they played brothers. That movie directly inspired a young director named A. L. Vijay to cast both of them again in his later film — he said he wanted that 'real sibling energy' they had.
  • Pandu once said in a 2016 interview: 'Ravi is the only actor who can make me forget my lines. We'd be in the middle of a scene, he'd throw a look I didn't expect, and I'd just freeze. Then we'd both crack up. The director hated us.'
  • In Narathan (2016), their last film together, they played rivals for the first time. Ravi later admitted they kept accidentally slipping into friendly banter during tense scenes — the director had to yell 'cut' and remind them they were supposed to hate each other.
