• Raman Kumar was a theatre director before films. He cast Avtar Gill in his directorial debut 'Saath Saath' (1982) after seeing him in a stage play. Gill was the first actor Raman ever directed on a film set.
• In 'Raahee' (1987), Raman wrote a long monologue for Gill's character. Gill delivered it in one take. Raman later said that take became the emotional anchor of the entire second half.
• After 'Parbat Ke Us Paar' (1988) flopped, Raman didn't direct another film for nearly 20 years. Avtar Gill was the one who pushed him to make 'Sarhad Paar' (2007), even helping produce it. Gill said he owed Raman his first break.
• Raman Kumar once told a trade magazine: 'Avtar is the only actor who never asked me for a single change in the script. He trusted my writing blindly. That trust made me a better director.'
• The song 'Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho' from 'Saath Saath' (1982) became a cult classic. Raman and Avtar both later said the emotional weight of that song worked because Gill's on-screen reaction to it was completely unscripted — Raman kept the camera rolling.
