• Selva and Goundamani were first paired together in 'Karnaa' (1995) because the director, R. K. Selvamani, needed a comedy track that could match the film's intense political drama. He specifically chose Goundamani to bounce off Selva's straight-man energy, and the duo clicked so well that they made two more films in the next two years.
• In 'Pudhayal' (1997), Selva played the serious, duty-bound police officer while Goundamani was his comic sidekick. The trick was that Goundamani never let Selva's character stay grim — he'd interrupt tense moments with one-liners, forcing Selva to react with exasperated silence. That push-and-pull became their signature.
• Their third and final film together, 'Sishya' (1997), was a remake of a Malayalam hit. But because Selva and Goundamani were already a known pair, the Tamil version leaned heavily into their comedy track — which ended up being the only thing audiences remembered.
