Partnership facts

• Pran was the one who insisted Jeetendra play the lead in 'Jal Mahal' (1980). The script originally had a different hero, but Pran told the director he'd only do the villain role if Jeetendra was cast opposite him.
• On the sets of 'Khoon Ka Rishta' (1981), Jeetendra and Pran would share a cup of chai between every take. Jeetendra later said Pran taught him how to time a pause in a dramatic scene — something no other co-star had bothered to do.
• Their 1985 film 'Pataal Bhairavi' was a rare fantasy-adventure where Pran played a negative role opposite Jeetendra's hero. The film's success directly inspired the 1991 Telugu remake 'Bhairava Dweepam', which became a cult classic in South Indian cinema.
• Jeetendra once said in a 1986 interview: 'Pran sahab never let me feel like a junior artist. He'd deliberately miss his cue so I could get the better line in a scene. That's the kind of man he was.'
• Their first film together, 'Aap Ke Deewane' (1980), was almost shelved because the producer ran out of money. Pran offered to work for half his fee so the film could release — on the condition that Jeetendra's character got the film's best song.
• In 'Haisiyat' (1984), Pran deliberately played his villain role with a softer voice than usual. He told Jeetendra on set: 'If I shout, the audience will hate me. If I whisper, they'll hate me more — and love you for fighting me.'
