• Anupam Kher was already a National Award winner when he signed Satyamev Jayate (1987), but he took a supporting role opposite Vinod Mehra — then a bigger star — because the script had a courtroom climax where both actors got equal screen time. Kher later said he learned how to pace a dramatic monologue by watching Mehra rehearse.
• In Bees Saal Baad (1988), Mehra played the haunted hero while Kher played the comic sidekick. On set, Mehra would deliberately flub his lines in the first take to make Kher laugh, then nail the second take — a trick that loosened Kher's natural intensity and gave their scenes a lived-in rhythm.
• During the shoot of Insaniyat (1994), Mehra was already battling the heart condition that would kill him a year later. Kher would drive him home after night shoots, and they'd stop for chai at a dhaba in Andheri. Kher has never spoken about those drives in interviews — but a crew member recalled it in a 1995 Stardust article.
• After Mehra's death in 1995, Kher told Filmfare: 'Vinod was the only co-star who could make me forget the camera. He'd whisper a joke right before 'action' and I'd have to bite my cheek to keep from laughing. That's why our scenes together look so alive — we were barely holding it together.'
• The only reason these two worked together three times is because Mehra personally recommended Kher to the producer of Satyamev Jayate after the original choice (a younger actor) backed out. That film's success led to the other two — meaning Kher's entire early pairing with Mehra exists because Mehra made one phone call.
