Partnership facts

• Udayakumar was a struggling newcomer when he cast Janagaraj in Urimai Geetham (1988). Janagaraj was already a known comedian. The gamble paid off — Janagaraj’s comic timing saved that film from being a total washout.
• In Kizhakku Vasal (1990), Udayakumar wrote scenes specifically for Janagaraj to improvise. Janagaraj would take a two-line dialogue and stretch it into a three-minute monologue. Udayakumar kept the camera rolling and let him run. That film became their first hit together.
• Nandhavana Theru (1995) was the last film they made together. But it directly inspired a wave of small-town comedy-dramas in Tamil cinema through the late 1990s. Directors like K. S. Ravikumar have cited this film’s tone as a template for their own village comedies.
• After Nandhavana Theru flopped, Udayakumar and Janagaraj had a falling out over creative differences. They never spoke again. Janagaraj later said in a 2001 interview that Udayakumar stopped taking his calls. The pair that made three films in seven years ended with a silent split.
• Janagaraj once told a magazine: 'Udayakumar gave me the freedom to be a fool on screen. Other directors wanted me to be a clown. He wanted me to be a man who happens to be funny.'
