The Vivek & V. Shekar partnership

Between 1997 and 2002, they barely worked apart — 4 films in 5 years. From Pongalo Pongal (1997) to Namma Veetu Kalyanam (2002). The unfolded closed with Namma Veetu Kalyanam in 2002.

It started with Pongalo Pongal (1997).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Viralukketha Veekkam; the 2000s to Koodi Vazhndhal Kodi Nanmai. Vivek acted in every film; V. Shekar directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Vivek was already a popular comedian when he and Shekar first teamed up for Viralukketha Veekkam (1999). But Shekar was a debutant director. Vivek took a risk saying yes to a newcomer — and that film became their only hit together.
  • On the sets of Koodi Vazhndhal Kodi Nanmai (2000), Shekar let Vivek improvise most of his dialogue. Vivek would rewrite his lines the night before, and Shekar would just roll camera. That film’s comedy track has zero scripted lines — all Vivek’s live brain.
  • Namma Veetu Kalyanam (2002) was supposed to launch a new heroine. Shekar cast a young girl named Reema Sen. The film tanked so badly (2.9/10) that Reema Sen’s career in Tamil almost ended before it started. She survived only because of later hits with other directors.
  • After Namma Veetu Kalyanam bombed, Vivek and Shekar never spoke again. Not a single phone call. Shekar later admitted in a 2015 interview that the failure broke their friendship — Vivek felt Shekar rushed the script, Shekar felt Vivek didn’t promote the film.
  • Shekar once said: 'Vivek was the only actor who could make me laugh during a take. But after Namma Veetu Kalyanam, he stopped returning my calls. I don’t blame him.' — from a 2015 interview with a Tamil weekly.
