• Gemini Ganesan was the original choice for the lead in Veera Abhimanyu (1965), but he was hesitant about the mythological genre. A.V.M. Rajan personally convinced him by promising to match his intensity in the war scenes — and then doubled his own dialogue practice to keep up.
• In Pandhayam (1967), Rajan played the calm, morally upright brother while Ganesan played the hot-headed gambler. Rajan later admitted in an interview that Ganesan would deliberately flub a line in rehearsal to make Rajan laugh, then nail it in the final take — keeping Rajan on edge and sharpening his own performance.
• During the shoot of Chakkaram (1968), the two actors shared a room at a lodge in Tenkasi for three weeks. Rajan would wake up at 5 AM to practice his lines aloud; Ganesan would groan, pull a pillow over his head, and then join him for tea at 6 — a ritual they repeated for every outdoor schedule.
