• Ilavarasu was a popular character actor by 2000, but Ranjith was a newcomer. For their first film 'Sabhash', Ranjith personally requested Ilavarasu to play a key supporting role, and Ilavarasu agreed without even reading the full script — he just trusted the young director's energy.
• In 'Pandavar Bhoomi' (2001), Ranjith wrote a long monologue for Ilavarasu's character. Ilavarasu delivered it in one take, then told Ranjith to cut the next two pages because the emotion was already there. Ranjith later said that taught him to trust actors more than his own writing.
• During the shoot of 'Bheeshmar' (2003), Ilavarasu would drive Ranjith home every night after pack-up because Ranjith didn't own a vehicle yet. They'd stop at the same tea stall near Madurai highway and discuss the next day's scenes. That stall owner later became a minor character in 'Pasupathi c/o Rasakkapalayam'.
• Ranjith once said in an interview: 'Ilavarasu is the only actor who can make my dialogues sound like they were his own words. I write for him, not the other way around.'
• The success of 'Pasupathi c/o Rasakkapalayam' (2007) directly led to Ranjith being offered his first big-budget film as a director. Ilavarasu recommended him to the producer after seeing how Ranjith handled the village comedy-drama. That next film was 'Eeram' (2009), which launched Ranjith into mainstream Tamil cinema.
