The Jaishankar & Cho partnership

Between 1968 and 1974, they barely worked apart — 7 films in 6 years. 1973 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 6 years, a JaishankarCho film arrived almost every year.

From Bommalattam (1968) to Kalyanamam Kalyanam (1974). The played out closed with Kalyanamam Kalyanam in 1974.

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 86% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Bommalattam; the 1970s to Sudhattam. Jaishankar acted in every film; Cho acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Cho was already a big name as a writer and actor when he cast Jaishankar in Bommalattam (1968). But here's the twist: Cho wrote the film specifically for Jaishankar after watching him in a small role. He told friends he saw 'a star waiting to explode'.
  • On set, Cho would rewrite dialogues on the spot — and Jaishankar would memorize them in one take. No retakes needed. Cho later said Jaishankar's speed forced him to write sharper lines. They pushed each other to be faster, tighter.
  • After every film wrap, Cho and Jaishankar would go to the same small eatery in T. Nagar and split a plate of idiyappam. No alcohol, no big parties. Just two men eating and talking about the next script. They did this for all 7 films.
  • Their film Vakkurudhi (1973) was one of the first Tamil films to openly discuss caste politics in a courtroom setting. It directly inspired K. Balachander's later courtroom dramas. Without this film, you might not have had Thanneer Thanneer.
  • Cho once said in an interview: 'Jaishankar was the only actor who could make my words sound like they were his own. I wrote for him, not the other way around.'
  • In Unakkum Enakkum (1972), Jaishankar improvised a 3-minute monologue about friendship that Cho hadn't written. Cho loved it so much he kept it in the final cut. That scene is still shared on Tamil WhatsApp groups today.
