The Jaishankar & R. Devarajan partnership

From Ponnana Vazhvu (1967) to Ashirvadham (1972). The played out closed with Ashirvadham in 1972. It started with Ponnana Vazhvu (1967).

The shape of the work

The 1960s belonged to Ponnana Vazhvu; the 1970s to Ashirvadham. Jaishankar acted in every film; R. Devarajan directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Jaishankar was already a star when he agreed to do Ponnana Vazhvu (1967). But R. Devarajan was a debutant director. The producer was nervous. Jaishankar insisted he saw something in Devarajan's script. That film became a hit and launched Devarajan's directorial career.
  • Devarajan wrote every scene with Jaishankar's voice in mind. He said Jaishankar's dialogue delivery had a 'rhythm that made even ordinary lines feel like poetry.' On set, Jaishankar would often ask for one more take — not because he flubbed, but because he wanted to match the exact beat Devarajan had in his head.
  • After Ashirvadham (1972), they never worked together again. No fight. No fallout. Devarajan simply moved to producing, and Jaishankar's career took a different turn. But in a 1990 interview, Jaishankar said Devarajan was the only director who 'understood my pauses.' They stayed in touch till Jaishankar's death.
  • R. Devarajan once said: 'Jaishankar didn't just act in my films — he taught me how to write for the camera. Every time I wrote a scene, I'd ask myself: will this let him breathe?'
  • Pennai Vazhavidungal (1969) was the first Tamil film to have a female-centric title that wasn't a tragedy. It inspired a wave of 'women-empowerment' titles in the early 70s, including films by other directors who copied the formula. Devarajan and Jaishankar didn't plan it — it just happened.
