Partnership facts

• Director S. P. Muthuraman cast both of them in Nallavan (1988) after seeing their comic timing in separate stage plays. He reportedly told them, 'You two don't need a script — just react to each other.'
• In Amma Pillai (1990), Charle would deliberately flub his lines to make S. S. Chandran break character. Chandran once said in an interview that Charle's unpredictability forced him to stay sharp — 'He made me a better actor because I never knew what he'd say next.'
• During the shoot of Pudhumai Pithan (1998), the two shared a room in a small lodge near the set. They would rehearse scenes at 2 AM, waking up the entire floor. The hotel manager eventually asked them to leave — but they finished the film anyway.
• Their double-act in Nallavan (1988) directly inspired a younger comedian duo — Goundamani and Senthil — to pitch a similar 'straight man vs wild card' dynamic to director K. Bhagyaraj. That pairing went on to define Tamil comedy for a decade.
• Charle once told a fan magazine: 'Chandran was the only actor who could make me laugh even when the director yelled cut. We'd ruin takes because we couldn't stop giggling. The audience never saw those — but they felt the joy.'
• After Pudhumai Pithan (1998), they never spoke again. No fight — just drifted apart. Chandran later said in a private gathering that Charle stopped returning his calls. Neither ever explained why.
