The 1980s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Thaayillamal Naan Illai; the 1980s to Apoorva Sahodarigal. Thengai Srinivasan acted in every film; R. Thyagarajan directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Thyagarajan first cast Srinivasan in Vellikizhamai Viradham (1974) after seeing him on stage. Srinivasan was a theatre regular, and Thyagarajan needed a comedian who could also handle emotional beats. He took a chance on a stage actor with zero film experience.
• On the sets of Thayilla Kuzhandhai (1976), Srinivasan would rewrite his own lines in the morning and run them by Thyagarajan before the shot. Thyagarajan let him do it because Srinivasan’s rewrites always got more laughs from the crew than the original script.
• Their 1983 film Apoorva Sahodarigal (7.5/10) was the first Tamil movie to use a double-role comedy track as the main plot. It directly inspired the 1990s trend of twin-swap comedies in Tamil cinema, including the Kamal Haasan starrer Michael Madana Kama Rajan.
• After every film wrap, Thyagarajan would take Srinivasan to the same small eatery in Kodambakkam for a plate of idli and filter coffee. They never discussed work there. It was their unwritten rule — no shop talk after the final shot.
• Srinivasan once told a magazine: 'Thyagarajan never told me how to act. He just said, “Be the man next door who makes people laugh without trying.” That was my entire training.'
