• Prabhu was a rising star in 1984, but K. Shankar was a veteran director with 40 films behind him. Shankar took a risk casting Prabhu in 'Ezhudhadha Sattangal' — the actor was still shaking off comparisons to his father Sivaji Ganesan. That film became Prabhu's first solo hit without his father's shadow.
• On the set of 'Raja Rishi' (1985), Shankar would block every scene in advance, but Prabhu kept improvising dialogue. Instead of stopping him, Shankar started leaving gaps in the script for Prabhu to fill. That film's most quoted line — about a king's loneliness — was entirely Prabhu's ad-lib.
• Their third film 'Nambinar Keduvathillai' (1986) introduced a young actress named Radha as Prabhu's love interest. Shankar personally coached her through the emotional climax. Radha went on to become one of Tamil cinema's biggest stars of the late 80s — directly launched from this pairing.
• After 'Nambinar Keduvathillai' wrapped, Shankar gifted Prabhu a gold ring with a tiny camera engraved on it. Prabhu wore it for years. They never worked together again, but Prabhu visited Shankar every Pongal until the director passed away in 2005.
• Prabhu once told a magazine: 'Shankar sir didn't treat me like a star. He treated me like a student who needed to learn the craft. I was scared of him for the first two films. By the third, I was scared of disappointing him.'
