Partnership facts

• Suhasini was just 17 when she acted opposite Janagaraj in Kalyana Kaalam (1982). She later admitted she was terrified of his loud, physical comedy style — but he deliberately softened his performance in their scenes together so she wouldn't freeze up.
• In En Bommukutty Ammavukku (1988), Janagaraj played the comic sidekick while Suhasini played the lead. He improvised most of his lines on set, and Suhasini — a trained actor — had to match his rhythm by reacting in real time. She later said that film taught her how to listen on camera.
• Janagaraj was a close friend of Suhasini's husband, director Mani Ratnam. The three of them would often brainstorm comedy tracks together at home. Suhasini once joked that Janagaraj was the only co-star Mani never got jealous of.
• Suhasini said in a 1996 interview: 'Janagaraj made me laugh so hard during En Purushan Than Enakku Mattundhan that the director had to cut and reset. He never broke character, but I did — every single time.'
• Their last film together, Indira (1995), was a serious drama with zero comedy. Janagaraj played a menacing villain — a complete 180 from their earlier films. Suhasini personally requested him for the role, telling the director he could do more than make people laugh.
