The Anandaraj & Raghuvaran partnership

They saved their best for last — Arasatchi (6.7/10) came 16 years in. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Thaimel Aanai (1988) to Ashoka (2008).

It started with Thaimel Aanai (1988).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Thaimel Aanai; the 2000s to Arasatchi. Anandaraj acted in every film; Raghuvaran acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Thaimel Aanai (1988), almost didn't happen. Director R. Sundarrajan originally wanted a different actor for the villain role opposite Anandaraj. Raghuvaran walked in, read one line, and Sundarrajan changed his mind on the spot.
  • In Baashha (1995), Raghuvaran played the cold-blooded villain Mark Antony. Anandaraj played the loyal sidekick. The trick? Raghuvaran deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery to make Anandaraj's punchy comebacks land harder. Anandaraj later said Raghuvaran 'gave him the rhythm' in every scene.
  • On the sets of Thozhar Pandian (1994), Raghuvaran would quietly rewrite his own lines to give Anandaraj more screen time. He told the director: 'He's the hero's friend. Let him speak more.' Anandaraj never knew until a crew member told him years later.
  • The success of their face-off in Baashha (1995) directly inspired the villain-sidekick dynamic in the 1997 film Arunachalam. Director C. Sundar reused the same 'slow villain vs fast sidekick' template, casting Raghuvaran again but swapping Anandaraj for a younger actor.
  • In Arasatchi (2004), their last film together, Raghuvaran was visibly unwell. Anandaraj adjusted his own blocking so Raghuvaran could deliver his lines sitting down. The director kept the camera tight on Raghuvaran's face. Anandaraj later called it 'the most respectful scene I ever did.'
