Partnership facts

• Karthik was a newcomer when he signed Pakkathu Veetu Roja (1982). S. S. Chandran, already a veteran comedian, personally asked the director to cast him opposite Karthik — he saw something raw in the kid and wanted to bounce off it.
• In Kalicharan (1988), Chandran deliberately slowed down his comic timing to match Karthik's nervous energy. Karthik later said Chandran would whisper 'wait for my blink' before delivering a punchline — that pause made the scene land harder.
• During the shoot of Ilaignar Ani (1994), Chandran would cook biryani at his home and bring it to set for Karthik. They ate together every single day of that schedule — no exceptions.
• The success of Pakkathu Veetu Roja (1982) directly led to Chandran being cast as the comic relief in Karthik's next three films with other directors. That one pairing rebooted Chandran's career in the 80s.
• Kalicharan (1988) almost didn't happen. Chandran had a scheduling conflict with another film. He reshot his portions for that other film in one night just to free up three days for Karthik's schedule.
