The 1960s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Mahakavi Kalidas; the 1970s to Noorandu Kalam Vazhga. R. Muthuraman acted in every film; L. Vijayalakshmi acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• They first worked together in Sumaithaangi (1962) because director A. Bhimsingh specifically paired the soft-spoken Muthuraman with the fiery Vijayalakshmi to create a tension that wasn't in the script. He told them to play against their natural temperaments.
• In Ooty Varai Uravu (1967), Muthuraman would deliberately flub his lines in the first take to make Vijayalakshmi laugh and break her formal acting style. She then loosened up, and they'd do the real take with a natural rhythm no one else could get from her.
• During the shoot of Noorandu Kalam Vazhga (1970), Vijayalakshmi cooked Muthuraman's favourite sambar rice every Sunday on set. He called her 'akka' off-camera, and she called him 'thambi' — a sibling bond that lasted until his death.
• Vijayalakshmi once told a magazine: 'Muthuraman made me feel like I was acting with my own brother. He never once made me uncomfortable, even in love scenes. That's rare in this industry.'
• Their only hit together, Sumaithaangi (1962), directly inspired director K. Balachander to cast Muthuraman in his breakthrough film Naanal (1965) — because Balachander saw how Muthuraman could hold his own against a strong female lead without being overshadowed.
