• For 'Mirch Masala' (1987), director Ketan Mehta cast Smita Patil as the defiant villager Sonbai. Dina Pathak wasn't the first choice for the village elder — Mehta rewrote the role specifically for Dina after seeing her in a Gujarati play. Smita then insisted Dina be given equal billing, which was rare for a supporting actress at the time.
• In 'Bheegi Palkein' (1982), Dina Pathak played Smita Patil's mother-in-law. The film's most intense scene — a confrontation where Dina slaps Smita — was shot in one take. Dina later said Smita told her beforehand: 'Don't hold back. I need to feel it.' The slap left a red mark for hours.
• Dina Pathak was a mentor to Smita Patil off-screen. During the shoot of 'Raahee' (1987), Smita was pregnant and exhausted. Dina would bring her homemade Gujarati snacks to the set and make sure she rested between shots. Smita called her 'Maa' on set, not 'Dina-ji'.
• Dina Pathak once said about Smita Patil: 'She was fire. I was earth. Together, we made the screen feel like home.' She said this in a 1990 interview with Filmfare, three years after Smita's death.
• The success of 'Mirch Masala' (1987) directly led to Ketan Mehta casting Dina Pathak in his next film 'Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!' (1988). Smita Patil had recommended Dina for that role too, but Smita died before the film released. Dina dedicated her performance to Smita in the credits.
