The Sarath Kumar & Delhi Ganesh partnership

After 12 years apart, they came back together for Sandamarutham (2015). They didn't share a set between 2003 and 2015. Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Idhaya Vaasal (1991) to Naa Naa (2023). Their most recent film, Naa Naa, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 67% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Veluchamy; the 2020s to Naa Naa. Sarath Kumar acted in every film; Delhi Ganesh acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first shared screen space in Idhaya Vaasal (1991), but the real spark came when director K. S. Ravikumar cast them back-to-back in Periya Gounder Ponnu (1992). Ravikumar deliberately paired the towering Sarath Kumar with the wiry Delhi Ganesh to create a visual comedy of scale — Ganesh’s frantic energy bouncing off Sarath’s deadpan stillness.
  • In Oor Mariyadhai (1992), Delhi Ganesh played the village elder who constantly scolds Sarath Kumar’s character. Ganesh later admitted in an interview that Sarath would deliberately flub his lines during rehearsals just to make Ganesh laugh, forcing him to stay sharp. That tension — Ganesh’s genuine irritation vs Sarath’s playful mischief — became the scene’s secret sauce.
  • Their 2015 film Sandamarutham was the first Tamil movie to be shot entirely in the Andaman Islands. Because of that shoot, a local Andaman crew member named R. K. Selvamani went on to become a cinematographer for several low-budget Tamil films — a direct career launch that started when he helped them carry equipment through the jungle.
  • On the sets of Veluchamy (1995), Delhi Ganesh discovered that Sarath Kumar was struggling with a personal financial crisis. Without telling anyone, Ganesh quietly slipped a cheque into Sarath’s makeup kit. Sarath returned it the next day with a note: “I’ll pay you back with a hit film.” They never spoke about it again.
  • Delhi Ganesh once said about Sarath Kumar: “He’s the only co-star who made me forget my lines because I was too busy watching him act. I’d just stand there and enjoy the show.” He said this during a 2016 stage event for Sandamarutham’s TV premiere.
  • In Naa Naa (2023), their sixth film together, the director let them improvise a 7-minute single-shot argument scene. Sarath Kumar set the pace — slow, deliberate — while Delhi Ganesh matched him by micro-adjusting his body language every 30 seconds. The result: a scene that plays like a tennis match where both players know each other’s next move.
