The Abbas & Vineeth partnership

From Kadhal Desam (1996) to Nee Premakai (2002). The played out closed with Nee Premakai in 2002. It started with Kadhal Desam (1996).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Kadhal Desam; the 2000s to Nee Premakai. Abbas acted in every film; Vineeth acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • Abbas and Vineeth were both newcomers when Kadhal Desam (1996) was being cast. Director Kathir initially wanted two established stars, but producer K. T. Kunjumon insisted on fresh faces. Abbas and Vineeth were screen-tested together and got the nod on the same day.
  • In Kadhal Desam, Abbas played the extrovert and Vineeth the introvert. Off-screen, it was the reverse — Vineeth was the more outgoing one, and he would constantly push Abbas to loosen up before takes. Abbas later said Vineeth’s energy made him act more naturally.
  • During Suyamvaram (1999), Abbas and Vineeth shared a room for the entire shoot in Kodaikanal. They would rehearse dialogues at night and improvise scenes the next morning. The director, S. A. Chandrasekhar, let them rewrite their own lines for several comedy sequences.
  • Kadhal Desam’s soundtrack, composed by A. R. Rahman, became a massive hit. The song 'Mustafa Mustafa' was picturised on Abbas and Vineeth dancing together — it’s still played at Tamil college festivals. The duo’s synchronized steps in that song inspired a generation of choreographers.
  • Vineeth once said in an interview: 'Abbas and I never competed. We knew the film would work only if we looked like real friends. So we became real friends.' He said this during the audio launch of Nee Premakai (2002).
  • After Nee Premakai (2002) flopped, Abbas and Vineeth drifted apart. They didn’t speak for nearly a decade. In 2015, they met at a mutual friend’s wedding and hugged it out. Vineeth posted a photo on social media with the caption: 'Brothers don’t need a script to reunite.'
