• They first shared screen space in Panneer Nadhigal (1986) because director K. Rangaraj needed a pair of actors who could play contrasting moral poles — Ravi the idealist, Chandran the cynic. Chandran was already a veteran comedian; Ravi was still finding his footing. Rangaraj bet on the mismatch.
• In Poovum Puyalum (1988), Chandran deliberately underplayed his comic timing in scenes with Ravi. He told the crew he didn't want to 'steal the frame' from a younger actor doing serious drama. Ravi later said Chandran's restraint taught him how to hold a scene without mugging.
• During the shoot of Idhu Engal Needhi (1988), Chandran would drive Ravi home every night after pack-up. Ravi didn't own a vehicle then. Chandran never mentioned it — just waited by the car with the engine running.
• Ravi once said in a 2010 interview: 'Chandran sir never treated me like a co-star. He treated me like a younger brother who needed to be protected from bad directors. He'd whisper notes to me between takes.'
• Their only three films together all flopped at the box office. But Poovum Puyalum later gained a cult following on late-night TV in the 1990s, directly inspiring a generation of Tamil indie filmmakers to cast unlikely duos — a serious lead with a deadpan comedian — in low-budget dramas.
