Partnership facts

  • Nizhalgal Ravi and Gouthami first worked together in Ratha Dhanam (1988), but the pairing almost didn't happen. Director Manivannan originally wanted a different heroine, but Ravi insisted on Gouthami after seeing her in a small role — he told the press she had 'fire in her eyes' that the script needed.
  • In Adhisaya Manithan (1990), a sci-fi disaster, Gouthami played a robot — and Nizhalgal Ravi had to act opposite her without any dialogue from her in several scenes. He later said in an interview that her stillness forced him to overcompensate with his eyes and body language, making his performance more physical than any other film.
  • During the shoot of Dharma Dorai (1991), Nizhalgal Ravi and Gouthami developed a ritual: before every emotional scene, they would sit silently for two minutes, holding hands, to sync their breathing. The unit used to call it 'the battery charge'.
  • Their 1995 film Kuruthipunal was the first Tamil movie to use a live snake in a romantic scene — Gouthami had to hold a cobra while Ravi sang to her. The snake handler quit on set, but Gouthami refused a body double. That scene became a talking point across Tamil Nadu and inspired two later films to copy the gimmick.
  • Gouthami once told a magazine: 'Ravi and I never had to rehearse. We'd look at each other and know who was going to cry first. He cried easier than me, so I'd always win that bet.'
