The Vaibhav Reddy & Premgi Amaran partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Saroja (2008) to The Greatest of All Time (2024). Their most recent film, The Greatest of All Time, came out in 2024 — the partnership is still active.

Mankatha is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Saroja (2008).

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Saroja; the 2020s to Manmadha Leelai. Vaibhav Reddy acted in every film; Premgi Amaran acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Venkat Prabhu cast Vaibhav and Premgi in Saroja (2008) because he wanted actors who could banter like real friends — not deliver rehearsed lines. Premgi was already his brother, but Vaibhav was a newcomer he spotted in a short film. The director made them room together for a week before shooting to build that natural rhythm.
  • In Goa (2010), Premgi improvised a whole scene where his character keeps mispronouncing Vaibhav's character's name. Vaibhav had to react without breaking character — and the takes where he genuinely cracked up made the final cut. That's the scene Tamil audiences still quote: 'Enna peru da idhu?'
  • Their chemistry in Chennai 600028 II (2016) directly inspired the buddy-dynamic in the 2019 web series 'Kallachirippu' — the showrunner admitted in an interview that he wanted that same 'two idiots who finish each other's sentences' energy.
  • On the sets of RK Nagar (2020), Vaibhav and Premgi had a running bet: whoever flubbed a line first each day had to buy the other a box of 'Kaju Katli' from the local sweet shop. Premgi lost 12 days straight. Vaibhav still jokes he funded Premgi's sugar habit.
  • Vaibhav once said in a 2021 podcast: 'Premgi doesn't act with you — he reacts to you. If I pause a second longer, he'll fill it with something so stupid I have to fight not to laugh. That's why our scenes work. He keeps me honest.'
