• Charlie and V. Shekar first teamed up because of a last-minute casting crisis. The producer of 'Pondatti Sonna Ketkkanum' (1991) needed a comedian fast, and Shekar, then an assistant director, recommended Charlie. Charlie walked in, cracked one line, and Shekar rewrote the entire comedy track around him that night.
• On set, Shekar would give Charlie only a rough situation — no full dialogue. Charlie would improvise three versions, and Shekar would pick the wildest one. That's why their films feel so loose and natural. The scene in 'Onna Irukka Kathukkanum' (1992) where Charlie argues with a goat? Entirely Charlie's idea mid-shot.
• Their 1997 film 'Pongalo Pongal' directly launched the career of comedian Vivek. Shekar gave Vivek his first major supporting role after seeing him in a stage play. Charlie personally coached Vivek on screen timing during the shoot. Without this pair, Vivek's big break might never have happened.
• After every film wrap, Charlie and Shekar would go to the same small tea stall near Kodambakkam and split a single cup of tea — no matter how successful the film was. They did this for all six films. Shekar still goes to that stall alone on the release date of any film he directs.
• Charlie once said in a 2003 interview: 'Shekar never told me I was funny. He just kept giving me scenes that made no sense on paper. That was his way of saying he trusted me to make it work.'
