The Nagesh & A.V.M.Rajan partnership

Between 1965 and 1973, they barely worked apart — 10 films in 8 years. 1972 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 8 years, a NageshA.V.M.Rajan film arrived almost every year.

From Ennadhan Mudivu (1965) to Veettukku Vandha Marumagal (1973). The spanned closed with Veettukku Vandha Marumagal in 1973.

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Thunaivan; the 1970s to Deivam. Nagesh acted in every film; A.V.M.Rajan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Ennadhan Mudivu (1965), almost didn't happen. Director M.A. Thirumugam wanted a bigger star for the lead, but Nagesh insisted on casting A.V.M. Rajan after seeing him in a stage play. Rajan got the role because Nagesh refused to sign otherwise.
  • In Thunaivan (1969), Nagesh played the comic sidekick while Rajan played the straight lead. But on set, Nagesh would deliberately flub his lines to make Rajan laugh, forcing Rajan to improvise his reactions. That unscripted tension became the film's most rewatched scenes.
  • During the shoot of Irulum Oliyum (1971), Nagesh and Rajan shared a room in a small lodge in Tenkasi. Every night, Nagesh would rehearse his comedy dialogues aloud, and Rajan would critique his timing. Rajan later said those sessions taught him how to react to comedy without overacting.
  • Their 1972 film Deivam was the first Tamil movie to feature a double-role for both lead actors simultaneously — Nagesh played twin brothers and Rajan played twin brothers. This gimmick directly inspired the 1975 blockbuster Apoorva Raagangal, which used a similar dual-role structure.
  • A.V.M. Rajan once told a fan magazine: 'Nagesh didn't just act with me — he directed me in every scene. He'd whisper, 'Slow down here, pause there.' I owe my best performances to his uncredited direction.'
  • In Bathilukku Bathil (1972), Nagesh and Rajan swapped their usual roles — Nagesh played the serious hero and Rajan played the comic relief. The switch confused audiences but critics noted that Rajan's comic timing, honed from watching Nagesh for years, was unexpectedly sharp.
