The 1960s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Then Nilavu; the 1970s to Urimai Kural. M. N. Nambiar acted in every film; C. V. Sridhar directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Nambiar was a veteran villain when Sridhar cast him as the lead in Nenjam Marappathillai (1963). It was a huge gamble — Nambiar had never carried a film before. Sridhar bet on his intensity and it paid off.
• On the sets of Sivandha Mann (1969), Sridhar would deliberately push Nambiar into long, unbroken takes. Nambiar’s theatre training meant he could hold emotion without cuts — Sridhar used that to build tension in the climax.
• Meenava Nanban (1977) was the first Tamil film to show a fisherman’s life with real location sound — Sridhar insisted on shooting in Rameswaram with actual fishermen as extras. Nambiar learned to row a catamaran for the role.
• After Nenjam Marappathillai, Sridhar and Nambiar became close friends. Nambiar would often drop by Sridhar’s office unannounced just to chat — no film talk, just coffee and gossip.
• Sridhar once said in an interview: 'Nambiar doesn't act — he becomes the character. I just had to point the camera at him.'
