• Shaad Ali was an assistant director on Mani Ratnam's sets when Rani Mukerji was cast in 'Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin'. He noticed her energy and later, when he got his first directorial break with 'Saathiya' (2002), he insisted she play the lead opposite Vivek Oberoi — even though she was already a bigger star by then.
• On 'Bunty Aur Babli' (2005), Rani and Shaad developed a shorthand where she would improvise entire comic sequences in one take — he'd just let the camera roll and cut later. The 'chai garam' scene with Abhishek Bachchan was entirely her ad-lib, and Shaad kept it in the final cut.
• The success of 'Bunty Aur Babli' (2005) directly inspired Yash Raj Films to greenlight a whole sub-genre of small-town con-artist comedies — including 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl' (2011) and eventually the 'Bunty Aur Babli' sequel in 2020. Without Rani and Shaad's chemistry in that film, those movies don't exist.
• Rani and Shaad remained close friends after their films ended. She was one of the first people he called when his father, filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, fell ill in 2015. She also attended the private screening of his 2018 film 'Ok Jaanu' unannounced, just to support him.
• Shaad Ali once said about Rani: 'She doesn't need a director. She needs a co-conspirator. On 'Bunty Aur Babli', I was just the guy who said 'action' and then got out of her way.'
