Partnership facts

• They first paired in Manappandhal (1961) because the director saw them at a mutual friend's wedding and thought their body language together was electric — he cast them on the spot without a screen test.
• Ashokan was known for his loud, theatrical style, but Saroja Devi quietly pulled him down to a natural pitch in Panathottam (1963). She would hold his wrist between takes and whisper 'slow down' — the final cut shows a restrained Ashokan you don't see in his other films.
• During the shoot of En Kadamai (1964), Saroja Devi's mother fell ill. Ashokan drove her 200 km to her hometown in the middle of the night, then returned to set at 5 AM to finish his scenes. She later said he was 'the only co-star who treated me like family, not a heroine.'
• Their film Vazhkai Vazhvadharkey (1964) was the first Tamil movie to feature a female police officer as a lead character — Saroja Devi's role directly inspired the 1970s trend of 'women in uniform' films in Tamil cinema.
• Ashokan once told a magazine in 1965: 'Saroja doesn't act with you — she acts for you. When I looked into her eyes in Naan Aanaiyittal, I forgot my lines twice because she made me believe we were actually in love.'
• After Naan Aanaiyittal (1966), they never worked together again — not because of a fight, but because Ashokan shifted to character roles and Saroja Devi moved to Kannada cinema. But they stayed phone friends until his death in 2001. She was the only co-star at his funeral.
