• Suruli Rajan was a popular comedian when K. Vijayan cast him in Dheepam (1977). But Vijayan didn't just want him for laughs — he gave Suruli Rajan a rare dramatic role as a blind man. That gamble paid off: the film ran for over 100 days.
• On the sets of Vandichakkaram (1980), Vijayan would let Suruli Rajan improvise entire stretches of dialogue. The director would then edit the scene around the comedian's spontaneous lines. That's why the comedy in that film feels so loose and natural — it was mostly Suruli Rajan's brain, not the script.
• Dhoorathu Idi Muzhakkam (1980) was the first Tamil film to use a then-new sound recording technique called 'sync sound' for outdoor scenes. Vijayan pushed for it, and Suruli Rajan had to deliver his lines perfectly in one take — no dubbing. The result was a raw, urgent audio texture that influenced later realist filmmakers like Balu Mahendra.
• After Vandichakkaram released, Vijayan and Suruli Rajan never worked together again. No fight, no fallout — they just drifted. Suruli Rajan later told a magazine that Vijayan had become 'too serious' about cinema, while he himself wanted to keep making people laugh. They never even had a proper goodbye.
• Suruli Rajan once said in an interview: 'Vijayan sir was the only director who trusted me to cry on screen. Everyone else just wanted me to make faces.' He was talking about his blind man role in Dheepam.
