Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in 'Pakkathu Veetu Roja' (1982), but neither was the lead. The film was a sleeper hit, and their comic timing in a single scene together got them noticed — the director later said he cast them again specifically because of that one exchange.
• In 'Nallavan' (1988), Janagaraj played the straight man to Chandran's over-the-top buffoon. Chandran would deliberately flub his lines to make Janagaraj break character — and Janagaraj's genuine irritation became part of the comedy. The director kept those takes in the final cut.
• Their double-act in 'Marudhani' (1985) was so popular that the film's producer greenlit a separate comedy track for them in 'Puthiya Aatchi' (1995) — a rare move where two supporting comedians got their own subplot, inspiring later Tamil films to give comic pairs standalone arcs.
• On the sets of 'Kavalai Padathe Sagodhara' (1998), Janagaraj and Chandran shared a single makeup van — not because of budget, but because they insisted. They'd rehearse their scenes together while getting ready, often rewriting the dialogue on the spot.
• Janagaraj once said in a 1999 interview: 'Chandran would start a scene with a plan, then throw it away the moment he saw my face. I had to stay alert — he made me a better actor because I never knew what he'd do next.'
