• Sujatha was already a star when D. Yoganand cast her in 'Oorukku Oru Pillai' (1982). But the director was nervous — he had never worked with a leading lady of her stature before. Sujatha reportedly told him on day one: 'Just tell me where to stand. I'll do the rest.' That broke the ice.
• Yoganand let Sujatha rewrite her own lines in 'Vaa Kanna Vaa' (1982). She had a knack for making dialogue sound natural, and he trusted her instincts over the script. The result? The film's most quoted scene — where her character teases the hero — was entirely her improvisation.
• Their third film 'Sumangali' (1983) directly inspired a wave of 'family melodrama with a strong female lead' films in the mid-80s. Producers started specifically asking for 'a Sujatha-Yoganand type story' — a genre that didn't exist before their collaboration.
• On the sets of all three films, Yoganand would bring Sujatha a cup of filter coffee every morning before the first shot. She later said it was the only time a director treated her like family, not just an actress. They stayed in touch until his death in 2006.
• Sujatha once told a magazine: 'Yoganand sir never shouted on set. He'd just look at me with those tired eyes, and I'd know I had to get the shot right. That silence was more powerful than any direction.'
