Manobala and Singampuli appeared together in 14 Tamil films between 2011 and 2024. Their highest-rated collaboration was Sowkarpettai (2016 — 6.3/10). Films span Eththan (2011) through Haraa (2024).
The Manobala & Singampuli partnership
2016 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 13 years, a Manobala–Singampuli film arrived almost every year. From Eththan (2011) to Haraa (2024).
Their most recent film, Haraa, came out in 2024 — the partnership is still active. It started with Eththan (2011).
The shape of the work
The 2010s account for 79% of everything they made together. The 2010s belonged to Sowkarpettai ; the 2020s to Haraa. Manobala acted in every film; Singampuli acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Manobala and Singampuli first teamed up for Ragalaipuram (2013) because Singampuli was desperate for a break. He had been struggling as a writer and small-time actor. Manobala, already a veteran director, gave him a lead role on the condition that Singampuli also write the dialogues. That one film started their 11-film run.
- On the set of Merlin (2018), their biggest hit, Manobala would let Singampuli improvise entire scenes. Singampuli once rewrote a climax monologue on the spot. Manobala kept the camera rolling. That raw, unscripted energy became the film's signature and made it a sleeper hit.
- Because of their partnership, actor-comedian 'KPY' Bala got his first major film break. Manobala cast him in Pakka (2018) on Singampuli's insistence. Bala's performance in that film led to him being cast in several other comedies. Without Singampuli pushing for him, Bala's career might have looked very different.
- Manobala and Singampuli had a ritual before every film: they would share a single cigarette on the first day of shoot. No matter the budget or schedule, they'd sit together for five minutes in silence. Singampuli said it was their way of 'clearing the air' before work began.
