The K. S. Gopalakrishnan & Jaishankar partnership

From Uyiraa Manama? (1968) to Ullathil Kuzhanthaiyadi (1978). The ran closed with Ullathil Kuzhanthaiyadi in 1978. It started with Uyiraa Manama? (1968).

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 83% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Uyiraa Manama?; the 1970s to Vazhaiyadi Vazhai. K. S. Gopalakrishnan directed every film; Jaishankar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Jaishankar was already a star when he signed 'Uyiraa Manama?' (1968). But he agreed to do the film only because director K. S. Gopalakrishnan promised him a role that broke his usual macho image — a husband torn between two women. That gamble paid off: the film ran for over 100 days.
  • On the sets of 'Vazhaiyadi Vazhai' (1972), Gopalakrishnan would write dialogue the night before and hand it to Jaishankar at 6 AM. Jaishankar would memorize it in one take, then suggest one small change — usually a pause or a glance — that made the line land harder. Gopalakrishnan later said he started writing with Jaishankar's rhythm in mind.
  • Their 1977 film 'Roudi Raakkamma' directly inspired the 1980s trend of 'village outlaw' films in Tamil cinema. Director R. C. Sakthi admitted in an interview that he modeled his 1981 hit 'Raja Paarvai' after the raw energy of that pairing.
  • After every film wrap, Jaishankar would gift Gopalakrishnan a bottle of Old Monk rum. Gopalakrishnan never drank on set, but he kept every bottle unopened in his office. When Jaishankar died in 2000, the director opened one and poured it on the ground at his grave.
  • Gopalakrishnan once told a magazine: 'Jaishankar didn't act my scenes. He lived them. I'd write a line for a hero, and he'd make it sound like a man who had actually lost everything.'
  • In 'Palabhishekam' (1977), Gopalakrishnan deliberately cast Jaishankar against a newcomer, Sridevi. He told Jaishankar: 'You set the pace. She will follow your silence.' Jaishankar slowed his delivery by half, and Sridevi later credited that film for teaching her how to react without dialogue.
