The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Enakkul Oruvan; the 2000s to Vetri Kodi Kattu. Manorama acted in every film; Charle acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Manorama was the one who insisted Charle be cast in Enakkul Oruvan (1984). The director wanted a different actor for the role, but she pushed for Charle after seeing him in a stage play. That film became their first together.
  • In Pattanathil Petti (1990), Charle improvised a whole comic sequence where his character keeps mispronouncing Manorama's name. She didn't break character once, but later admitted she was biting her tongue to stop laughing. That scene became the film's most replayed bit.
  • On the sets of Endrum Anbudan (1992), Manorama would cook Charle's favourite sambar rice every Friday. She said it was the only way to get him to stop chain-smoking between shots. He never missed a Friday meal.
  • The success of their comic pairing in Enakkul Oruvan directly inspired director K. Bhagyaraj to write a full-length comedy track for them in Pooveli (1998). That track later became a template for double-act comedians in Tamil cinema through the 2000s.
  • Charle once said in a 2003 interview: 'Manorama amma would scold me like a mother on set, then feed me like one. I never needed a director when she was around — she directed me better.'
  • After Pandavar Bhoomi (2001), they never worked together again. Not because of a fight — Manorama simply stopped getting offers for comic roles, and Charle moved into character parts. But they stayed in touch. She called him every Deepavali until she passed away in 2015.
