Partnership facts

• Sridhar was already a big name when he cast Gopalakrishnan as his cinematographer for Nenjirukkumvarai (1967). But Gopalakrishnan had never shot a full feature before. Sridhar took a gamble on a rookie.
• On Nenjirukkumvarai, Sridhar would block the scene with actors first, then call Gopalakrishnan to frame the shot. Gopalakrishnan often moved the camera in ways Sridhar hadn't planned — and Sridhar loved it. He said it made his scenes breathe.
• After Nenchirukkum Varai (1967) wrapped, Sridhar and Gopalakrishnan didn't speak for nearly a decade. Nobody knows why. They only reunited for Ninaivellam Nithya (1982) — and never worked together again after that.
• Ninaivellam Nithya (1982) was the film that introduced composer Ilaiyaraaja to Sridhar's regular team. Gopalakrishnan insisted on him. That soundtrack became a cult hit — and it's the only Sridhar film where Ilaiyaraaja scored all songs.
• Gopalakrishnan once said in an interview: 'Sridhar never told me what lens to use. He just said, 'Show me what you see.' That trust made me a better cameraman.'
