Partnership facts

• Krishnan-Panju were already a hit director duo when they cast V. K. Ramasamy in 'Uyarndha Manidhan' (1968). But here's the twist: Ramasamy was primarily a comedian then. They bet on him playing a serious, dignified lead — and it worked so well that the film became a turning point for his career.
• On the sets of 'Annaiyum Pithavum' (1969), Krishnan-Panju let V. K. Ramasamy improvise his dialogue delivery. Ramasamy would slow down his lines mid-scene, and the directors would adjust the camera to hold on his face longer. That pause-and-hold technique became their signature together.
• Because 'Uyarndha Manidhan' (1968) was such a success, it directly led to M. G. Ramachandran noticing V. K. Ramasamy's dramatic range. MGR later cast him in 'Nam Naadu' (1969) — a role that cemented Ramasamy as a character actor beyond comedy. Krishnan-Panju basically opened that door.
• V. K. Ramasamy and Krishnan-Panju had a quiet ritual before every shoot: they'd share a single cup of filter coffee from a specific shop in Kodambakkam. No one else was invited. It was their 10-minute prep huddle before facing the crew.
• Krishnan-Panju once said about V. K. Ramasamy: 'He didn't need direction — he needed space. We just gave him the frame and let him breathe.' That was from an interview with 'Kalki' magazine in the early 70s.
