Partnership facts

• Tabu was already a star in Telugu and Hindi when she signed Kadhal Desam (1996). Abbas was a newcomer. Director Kathir paired them because he wanted a fresh, urban couple — and Tabu specifically asked to work with a new face, not an established hero.
• In Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000), Tabu played the older, more serious sister while Abbas played the charming younger man chasing her. The tension worked because Abbas deliberately softened his usual intensity to match Tabu's controlled, understated performance — he let her set the emotional pace in every scene.
• Abbas has said in interviews that Tabu was the only co-star who would call him before a shoot to discuss the scene's subtext. They'd rehearse dialogues over the phone for hours, even for small moments. No other actress did that with him.
• Kadhal Desam (1996) launched the career of composer A.R. Rahman's assistant — the film's background score was by a then-unknown Harris Jayaraj. Tabu and Abbas's pairing gave the film a modern, cosmopolitan vibe that let Harris experiment with synth-pop, which later became his signature sound.
• Abbas once told a Tamil magazine: 'Tabu doesn't act. She just becomes the character. I had to stop acting and just react. That was the hardest lesson she taught me.'
• After Idi Sangathi (2008) flopped, Tabu and Abbas never worked together again. But they stayed in touch — Abbas attended Tabu's mother's funeral in 2022, and Tabu sent a handwritten note when Abbas's father passed away in 2019.
