Tabu and Paresh Rawal appeared together in 6 Hindi films between 1997 and 2026. Their highest-rated collaboration was Sanju (2018 — 7.6/10). Films span Qahar (1997) through Bhooth Bangla (2026).
The Tabu & Paresh Rawal partnership
After 11 years apart, they came back together for Sanju (2018). They didn't share a set between 2007 and 2018. Their work runs across 4 decades of Hindi cinema.
From Qahar (1997) to Bhooth Bangla (2026). Their most recent film, Bhooth Bangla, came out in 2026 — the partnership is still active.
The shape of the work
The 1990s belonged to Chachi 420; the 2020s to Bhooth Bangla. Tabu acted in every film; Paresh Rawal acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- They first shared screen space in 1997's 'Qahar', but neither was the original choice. The film's producer, Pahlaj Nihalani, cast Tabu after Manisha Koirala walked out, and Paresh Rawal stepped in when the first choice for the villain fell ill. They met on set for the first time during a night shoot in a rain-soaked studio.
- In 'Hera Pheri' (2000), Paresh Rawal's Baburao Ganpatrao Apte was a loud, chaotic force. Tabu played Anuradha, the calm, straight-faced landlord. Their scenes worked because Tabu never reacted to his madness — she just stared, deadpan, which made his comedy land harder. She set the silence; he filled it.
- Their pairing in 'Chachi 420' (1997) — where Paresh Rawal played a man disguised as a woman and Tabu played his on-screen wife — directly inspired the 2002 Tamil remake 'Unnai Ninaithu'. The Tamil version cast Paresh Rawal again in the same role, but replaced Tabu with a local actress. That film launched director Vikraman's career in Tamil cinema.
- On the sets of 'Cheeni Kum' (2007), Tabu and Paresh Rawal had a running bet: whoever flubbed a line first had to buy the other a plate of rasgullas from the Kolkata sweet shop next door. Tabu lost the first day. Paresh lost the next three. By the end of the shoot, they'd both gained two kilos.
- Tabu once said about Paresh Rawal: 'He is the only co-star who can make me laugh so hard that the director has to cut. In 'Hera Pheri', I ruined seven takes because I couldn't stop giggling at his improvised lines. He never got angry — he just made funnier faces.'
- In 'Sanju' (2018), they played parents of Sanjay Dutt. Their only scene together is a silent one: Tabu's mother holds back tears while Paresh Rawal's father stares at the floor. Neither speaks for 90 seconds. The director, Rajkumar Hirani, said he kept the camera rolling because both actors were 'breathing in sync' — a trick they'd developed from their comedy days to time reactions without dialogue.
