The Mansoor Ali Khan & Anandaraj partnership

Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema. They saved their best for last — 80's Buildup (7.1/10) came 28 years in. After 9 years apart, they came back together for Pulan Visaranai 2 (2015).

They didn't share a set between 2006 and 2015. The work is uneven: 80's Buildup (7.1) at one end, Krodham 2 (1.0) at the other.

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Makkal Aatchi; the 2020s to 80's Buildup. Mansoor Ali Khan acted in every film; Anandaraj acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Arasiyal (1997), was a political thriller where both played cops. Neither was a big name then. The director, R. K. Selvamani, paired them because he wanted two actors who looked like they could actually throw a punch — and both had that raw, street-fighter energy.
  • In Perarasu (2006), Mansoor Ali Khan played the comic sidekick while Anandaraj was the menacing villain. But here's the trick: Mansoor would deliberately flub his lines to make Anandaraj laugh during takes. Anandaraj, in turn, would stay in character and scold him on set — which made their on-screen tension feel real.
  • Silukkuvarupatti Singam (2018) was a surprise hit. It directly led to a wave of small-town comedy-action films in Tamil cinema — like the 2019 film 'Gurkha' and 'Kanni Maadam' — where the formula was 'one loud hero, one loud villain, and a village setting.' Without this pair's chemistry in that film, that mini-trend might not have happened.
  • They never hung out outside sets. Not once. Mansoor once said in an interview that they'd finish a scene, nod at each other, and walk away. No phone calls, no dinners. But the moment the director said 'action,' they'd click instantly — like two strangers who only know each other at work.
  • Mansoor Ali Khan once told a behind-the-scenes crew member: 'Anandaraj is the only actor who can make me feel like I'm actually in a fight. He doesn't pull his punches — and I don't either.'
  • In Bruce Lee (2017), they played rivals in a martial arts tournament. The fight choreographer said they refused to use stunt doubles for the final showdown. Mansoor kept pushing Anandaraj to hit harder, and Anandaraj kept saying 'I will break your jaw.' The result? A fight scene that looks genuinely dangerous — because it almost was.
