• Their first film together, Sirayil Sila Raagangal (1990), was a prison drama where Sarath Kumar played a jailbird. Vijayakumar, already a veteran, was cast as the warden. The director said he paired them specifically because Vijayakumar's stern screen presence would make Sarath's rebellious character pop harder.
• In Cheran Pandiyan (1991), Vijayakumar played the father and Sarath the son. The film's emotional core — a son seeking his father's approval — worked because Vijayakumar deliberately underplayed his scenes, letting Sarath's louder anger fill the space. Sarath later said Vijayakumar taught him that 'silence can shout louder than words' on set.
• Vijayakumar was a strict disciplinarian on set. During the shoot of Band Master (1993), Sarath Kumar showed up late once. Vijayakumar made him wait two hours before shooting his scenes — not out of anger, but to teach him that 'time is the only thing an actor can't buy back.' They never had a punctuality issue again.
• Their 2006 film Thalaimagan was the first Tamil movie to feature both actors as full-on antagonists — no redemption arc, no moral high ground. That cold, no-hero approach directly influenced the 2013 dark thriller Chennaiyil Oru Naal, where they reunited as morally grey characters. That film's director said he wrote the script specifically for this pair after watching Thalaimagan.
• Sarath Kumar once said in an interview: 'Vijayakumar sir doesn't act with you — he acts at you. Every scene with him felt like a real fight. I had to bring my A-game or he'd eat me alive on screen.'
• After 1977 (2009) wrapped, Vijayakumar quietly retired from acting. Sarath Kumar was the only co-star he called personally to say goodbye. They never worked together again until Chennaiyil Oru Naal (2013), which Vijayakumar agreed to only because Sarath personally requested him.
