• Pandiraj didn't plan to direct Kathakali. He was producing it. But when the original director walked out mid-pre-production, Pandiraj stepped in to direct — and that's how his first film with Madhusudhan Rao happened.
• On the sets of Idhu Namma Aalu, Pandiraj realized Madhusudhan Rao was great at comedy timing but struggled with emotional beats. So Pandiraj would shoot the funny scenes first, let Rao loosen up, then switch to the heavier moments. Rao later said that order saved the film.
• Etharkkum Thunindhavan was originally written for a different hero. But after Pandiraj saw Madhusudhan Rao's raw intensity in a single scene from Kathakali, he rewrote the entire script around Rao's physicality. That film gave Rao his first solo hit as a lead in Tamil.
• Pandiraj and Madhusudhan Rao share a running joke: every time they finish a film, Rao gifts Pandiraj a new shirt. Pandiraj has never worn any of them. He says he's saving them for Rao's 50th film.
