• Santhanam was still a TV comedian when Shanmugarajan cast him in Kaalai (2008). The director took a risk — Santhanam had barely done films, and this was his first real break in a supporting role that got him noticed.
• In Veeram (2014), Shanmugarajan wrote Santhanam's comedy track to run parallel to Ajith's serious arc — no overlap. Santhanam improvised most of his lines on set, and the director let him run wild. That freedom made the comedy land harder.
