Partnership facts

• They first shared screen in Pudhumai Pithan (1998) because the director needed a fresh pair — Devayani was just two films old, and Anandaraj was still shaking off his villain image. Neither was the first choice.
• In Oruvan (1999), Anandraj played a brutal antagonist, but Devayani’s character was the one who outsmarted him in the climax. She later said he deliberately held back his intensity in their scenes so her performance wouldn't get crushed.
• Their only hit together, Giri (2004), directly launched a short-lived trend of village-revenge films where the hero’s sister (played by Devayani) gets abducted by the villain (Anandaraj). Three copycat films followed in 2005 alone.
• During the shoot of Paattali (1999) — the film that scored a 1/10 — Anandaraj would bring Devayani homemade snacks between takes. She later revealed he did it to keep her mood light because the script was so bad.
• Devayani once told a magazine: 'Anandaraj was the only co-star who would rehearse with me even when the director wasn't around. He treated me like a younger sister, not a heroine.'
• Kummi Paattu (1999) was supposed to be their only film together — but the producer saw their test footage and demanded they be paired again in Oruvan (1999) the same year. That back-to-back booking locked them as a duo.
