• Charlie was a popular comedian when he was cast opposite Gouthami in 'Puthiya Vaanam' (1988). The director thought their contrasting energies — his goofy charm, her serious grace — would click. It did, and they became an unlikely but beloved pair overnight.
• In 'Raja Kaiya Vacha' (1990), Charlie’s comic timing let Gouthami play the straight woman without being boring. She later said he made her relax on set — he’d crack jokes between takes, and that looseness showed in their scenes together.
