Partnership facts

• Jaishankar was already a star when he signed 'Enga Veettu Penn' (1965), but Vijaya Nirmala was a newcomer. He personally asked the director to cast her after seeing her screen test — she later said he 'took a chance' on her.
• In 'Neelagiri Express' (1968), Jaishankar insisted on doing his own stunts on a moving train. Vijaya Nirmala matched his energy by refusing a body double for a scene where she had to jump between compartments. The director said they 'fed off each other's dare'.
• During the shoot of 'Uyiraa Manama?' (1968), the two would rehearse dialogues in the car between locations. Vijaya Nirmala later recalled that Jaishankar taught her how to time a pause for maximum impact — a trick she used for the rest of her career.
• Their last film together, 'Vazhaiyadi Vazhai' (1972), was a rural drama that directly inspired director K. Balachander to cast both of them in his own film 'Arangetram' (1973) — though that project never materialized. The script was later rewritten for a different pair.
• Vijaya Nirmala once said in a 2005 interview: 'Jaishankar never treated me like a junior artist. He would say, "You are the one the camera loves — I just stand next to you." That made me fearless.'
