• Puttanna Kanagal cast Vanisri in 'Teecharamma' (1968) after seeing her in a small Telugu role. He bet on her intensity over her star power. She was nervous about the heavy emotional scenes. He told her: 'Just cry like nobody is watching.' That scene became the film's most talked-about moment.
• Kanagal directed Vanisri to underplay her expressions in 'Irulum Oliyum' (1971). He would whisper 'less is more' before every close-up. She later said he taught her to act with her eyes, not her hands. That film is still studied for its silent grief scenes.
